A plug adapter changes the shape of the pins. A voltage converter changes the electricity. Confusing them is how a dual-voltage laptop charger is fine in Paris and a 120-volt hair dryer is not.

There is no single 'five-year laptop.' Windows 11 Home and Pro versions are serviced for 24 months each; you must keep taking feature updates. Windows 10's free security updates ended 14 October 2025. Apple currently patches the latest macOS and the two previous. Chromebooks publish a 10-year auto-update window from the platform date. The hardware is not the same clock as the OS.

Microsoft's Windows 11 install floor is 4 GB. Copilot+ PCs require 16 GB. Apple's current M5 MacBook Air starts at 16 GB of unified memory, soldered. The marketed 8 GB 'everyday' machine is the one that starts swapping when the browser, a meeting app, and a document are open together. Buy 16 GB unless you have a specific reason not to, and 32 GB if you run VMs or heavy creative tools. You probably cannot add RAM later.

USB-C describes a connector shape. It does not promise a specific data speed, video support, or charging wattage, all three of which vary by cable and port even when the plug fits perfectly.

EPA's order of operations is source control, then ventilation with outdoor air, then filtration. A portable cleaner is a supplement for particles in a room you actually occupy. It is not a mold contractor, a radon system, or a gas-phase miracle.

Advertisers are legally required to have evidence for the claims they make, but the law leaves enormous room for a claim to be technically true and still tell you almost nothing useful. Here is how to separate the two.

Annualize the price, read the renewal and price-change terms, and try the cancellation path on a throwaway trial if you can. A monthly number is a marketing unit. ROSCA still requires a simple way to stop an online recurring charge, even after the FTC's 2024 Click-to-Cancel rule was vacated. A free trial is a billing arrangement, not a gift.

Federal law requires every garment's fiber content to be listed by percentage, in a specific order, with specific rules about what can be left off. Once you know the rules, the label tells you more than it seems to at a glance.

A pay-in-four offer takes seconds to accept and rarely asks the questions a loan application normally would. Federal data shows that gap matters: a third of BNPL borrowers are juggling loans from more than one lender at a time.

The front of a U.S. cosmetic tells you what the product claims to be and how much is in the package. The back tells you who is responsible and, sometimes, that safety was never substantiated. None of that is a premarket FDA stamp.

An abstract is written to summarize a study, not to argue for how it should be used. Learning to read past the summary, to the study design and sample size behind it, is what separates a defensible claim from a headline.

Sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug in the United States, with specific rules for what "broad spectrum," a given SPF number, and a water-resistance claim are actually allowed to promise. Most of that regulation is invisible unless you know what to look for.

OSHA's Computer Workstations guidance gives specific, measurable placement rules, not vague posture advice. Screen height, keyboard distance, and elbow position each have a real target you can check against your own setup.

CISA's mobile security guidance covers more than a screen lock: a carrier PIN to block SIM swapping, phishing-resistant sign-in, and an app-permission review most people never do. The order matters as much as the steps.

Researchers already have a real, tested framework for rating how much confidence a claim deserves. It has nothing to do with how many studies get cited, and everything to do with how those studies were designed and how consistently they agree.

Passkeys are phishing-resistant cryptographic credentials. Password managers still hold the majority of logins that have no passkey, plus recovery codes. FIDO's own model includes third-party passkey providers. The 2026 move is not a fork in the road. It is a manager that can store passkeys, used on every site that still wants a password.

A good desk lamp puts light on the work without putting glare on the screen or in your eyes. OSHA wants the monitor perpendicular to windows and not washed by overhead bounce. IES-derived office practice keeps computer-task illuminance from exceeding about 500 lux on average. Geometry, shade, and a dimmer do that job. A lumen number on a box does not.

USB PD is a conversation on the cable, not a wattage printed on a brick. The charger advertises voltage and current steps. The device requests a contract. The cable can silently cap the result. Above 100 watts you have left Standard Power Range.
