Accessibility
Culture Column aims to make its reporting, navigation, forms, images, tables, and interactive features usable by people with a wide range of disabilities, technologies, and reading preferences.
We use WCAG 2.2 Level AA as the principal technical target.
Our target
Our design and development work considers semantic structure, keyboard access, visible focus, text alternatives, form labels and status messages, color contrast, reflow, zoom, target size, reduced motion, headings, landmarks, tables, and error identification.
WCAG conformance is a useful technical measure, not a claim that every person, assistive technology, browser, document, or third-party service will encounter no barrier. Accessibility is maintained through ongoing review rather than a one-time certification.
Core reading and navigation should work without a mouse and at substantial zoom.
Supported use
We test important flows using current browsers, keyboard navigation, responsive layouts, reduced-motion settings, automated accessibility checks, and manual inspection. We use native HTML behavior where practical and provide accessible names for controls and meaningful images.
For the best experience, use a current browser and assistive technology version. Browser extensions, custom styles, unusual zoom combinations, disabled JavaScript, and older technology can affect behavior, but we welcome reports that help us identify a reasonable repair.
Third-party and historical material may not meet the same standard immediately.
Known limitations
External sites, embedded services, retailer pages, downloadable source documents, and third-party media are not fully controlled by Culture Column. Some complex source documents, legacy assets, or data visualizations may require an alternative explanation or format.
We do not claim perfect or universal conformance. When a barrier is substantiated, we prioritize core access, severity, frequency, and the availability of a reasonable alternative while a durable repair is developed.
Tell us the task, page, and barrier rather than having to diagnose the code.
Request help or an alternative
Email accessibility@culturecolumn.com with the URL, what you were trying to do, what happened, and your preferred contact method. If comfortable, include the browser, device, and assistive technology. Do not include medical records or unrelated sensitive information.
You may request an accessible alternative for Culture Column material. We will review requests in good faith and may need clarification, time, or a different format depending on the content and available rights. Contacting us does not waive any rights or guarantee a particular technical remedy or deadline.
Accessibility requirements are included in design, code review, and content production.
Ongoing review
We pair automated checks with manual review of navigation, forms, article structure, tables, charts, responsive behavior, and focus order. Material regressions are treated as product defects.
This statement may be updated as the site, standards, or testing changes. Feedback is used to set priorities and improve patterns shared across the publication.
