What Makes Hair Products Feel Heavy
Heaviness is usually a film on a fiber that did not need that much film. High-viscosity silicones, butters, and oils stay put. Fine hair notices first. A clarifying wash removes residue. It does not mean silicones 'destroyed' the hair.

The argument
The coated, lank feeling is residue occupying the fiber's surface: non-volatile silicones (especially higher-viscosity dimethicone and amodimethicone), heavy oils, waxes, and some cationic polymers, applied in a dose the hair's diameter and porosity cannot wear. Water-soluble PEG-modified silicones and light esters rinse more readily. Japanese cosmetic-science work has measured amodimethicone accumulating on hair with repeated use. Silicones are not a moral category. They are a film. Fine, straight hair shows the film as lost volume. Coiled or very dry hair often wants that film. Reading the INCI list tells you what can build. It does not tell you the percentage.

Hair that feels heavy is usually wearing a coat. The coat can be useful: shine, slip, less friction, a little armor against a hot tool. It becomes a problem when the coat is thicker than the fiber, or when yesterday's coat is still there when you add today's. People blame 'silicones' as a tribe. Formulators think in viscosity, charge, and whether the material rinses. Those are not the same conversation.
You will not get a milligram-per-fiber number off a bottle. 21 CFR 701.3 lists names, not doses, and anything at 1 percent or less may be in any order. What you can do is recognize which names are film-formers, notice whether your hair is fine enough to show them, and wash accordingly.

Fine, straight fiber
Small circumference, sebum travels fast, volume is easy to lose. A continuous dimethicone or butter film reads as limp, greasy, or 'dirty the same day.'

Coarse, coiled, or very dry fiber
More surface, more need for slip and reduced friction. The same film can be the difference between a comb gliding and a comb snapping hair. Heaviness here often means you used a mask as a daily conditioner, not that the ingredient class is forbidden.
Water-insoluble films. Higher-viscosity dimethicone is more occlusive. Amodimethicone is used because it deposits well, which is also why Japanese cosmetic chemists treat its buildup as a formulation problem.
More rinseable silicones
Names with PEG or PPG, dimethicone copolyol

Dimethicone is a family of chain lengths. Light fractions can give slip and rinse with an ordinary anionic shampoo. Heavy fractions are why a serum that looked like water on day one feels like plastic wrap on day ten. Amodimethicone is popular in conditioners because the amino groups help it stick to damaged, anionic hair. That stickiness is the feature. A 2011 paper in the Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists of Japan treats the accumulation of amodimethicone under repeated use as the problem to solve, and measures silicone on the fiber. That is not a blogger panic. It is a formulator admitting the deposit they wanted can overshoot.
Dose and placement matter as much as the INCI line. A pea of conditioner on the last four inches of fine hair is a different event from a mask from roots to ends, left on under a cap. Leave-in serums are concentrated on purpose. If the hair already looks shiny and the comb glides, you are done. Extra product does not store as future softness. It stores as tomorrow's grease.
Clarifying shampoos are stronger detergents, sometimes with chelators for mineral film from hard water. Use them when hair feels coated even after a normal wash, or when stylers have stacked. Daily clarifying is how you get to the opposite complaint: straw. Alternate with a regular shampoo if your scalp and lengths disagree.
If flakes, itch, or shedding showed up when you changed products, stop playing chemist and see a dermatologist. Residue can irritate. So can seborrheic dermatitis, which will not care that you switched to a 'clean' butter.

Do silicones cause hair loss?
No good clinical case that a dimethicone film pulls hair out of the follicle. They can make hair look thinner by collapsing volume. Actual shedding is a medical workup.

Should I avoid dimethicone forever if I have fine hair?
Not forever. Avoid heavy leave-ins and weekly masks that list dimethicone or amodimethicone high, and keep a shampoo that actually lathers. A light rinse-out conditioner can still be useful.

Hard water feels like buildup too. Is that silicones?
Not necessarily. Mineral deposits are a different film. A chelating or clarifying wash helps that. The INCI list will not show your tap.

You can see whether dimethicone, amodimethicone, oils, or PEG-modified silicones are declared. You cannot read dose from position once ingredients fall to 1 percent or less.
The American Academy of Dermatology does not give one number. It gives a rule: wash when the scalp is dirty or oily, which might be daily for straight oily hair and every few weeks for dry, curly, or thick hair. Shampoo the scalp, not the lengths.
