The category question is a trap. 'Smart rings' are not a standard. They are several businesses, some of which sell you a sensor and some of which sell you a magazine that happens to need a sensor. Oura wrote the second model down. As of their July 2026 membership article, a Gen3 or newer ring without a paid plan shows three daily scores, the battery, and settings. The list of what membership includes is the rest of the brochure: detailed sleep, around-the-clock heart rate, temperature, stress, heart-health metrics, reports.
If you will not pay $69.99 a year in the US, do not buy that brochure. Buy a ring whose maker already included the app, or buy nothing.

Three scores without the graphs are a mood ring with better PR. You cannot audit why Sleep was 71. That is fine if you only wanted a nudge. It is not fine if you bought the ring to see stages and HRV. Oura will still let you export data from Membership Hub even without a plan, which is decent. It will not let the stripped app pretend to be the full product.
Samsung's ring is only 'free' inside Samsung Health. An iPhone user is not buying the same object. Ecosystem lock is a kind of subscription paid in phone brand.
How to interpret recovery data is what to do with the numbers if you have them. Smart rings compared is fit, battery, and sizing. This page is only whether the lights stay on after the trial month.

It is a magazine. It is cheap compared with replacing a $400 ring. It is expensive compared with a $0 Samsung Health install if you already wanted that ecosystem.
